Well, it’s almost that time of year again! Our annual Chili Cook-off at TLS.NET is coming up, and we’re all looking forward to some great (and hot) chili, as well as some good competition among TLS.NET employees.

This event is open to all TLS.NET clients, friends, and family members. All are welcome to attend as judges in the cook-off…we will have a lot of different chili competitors, so the more judges, the better!

We will also be collecting canned/boxed foods during the cook-off, for the Love Chapel of Columbus (www.columbuslovechapel.com). We welcome you to use this as an opportunity to clean out your cabinets and give to those who are in need (if the chili isn’t an enticing enough reason for you).

The 2012 TLS.NET Chili Cook-off will take place on Friday, February 3rd, at 12PM. This will be at our Columbus, IN office. Post a comment below if you plan on attending…We hope to see you there!

TLS.NET welcomes aboard its newest Account Manager, Patti Collins, who brings a wealth of technology expertise from 14+ years of selling voice/data/video networks, network services, and managed service offerings from leading manufacturers like Cisco, Nortel and Avaya.

She began her career in technology as the Customer Service Manager for a local Indianapolis stationery company, when she acquired an IVR to help reduce costs and streamline customer service in 1990, then a new phone system when they moved into a new headquarters building. After experiencing downsizing, she moved to the small reseller she purchased the technology from as a System Designer, and quickly moved into project management. After excelling at these roles, she moved to Sprint in Carmel, selling to the Central Indiana market and later Embarq/CenturyLink in their Southern Indianapolis territory.

Technology has changed so significantly that it continues to be a challenge to keep up with and requires more and more learning. "Coming to TLS.NET affords me the opportunity to work with a well-respected organization in the community that puts great emphasis on customer service, allows me the opportunity to learn more about the wide range of technology solutions, and positions me as a true Technology Partner to my clients," she says.

Chris Roberts joins the TLS.NET team as our newest Project Manager. A graduate of Purdue University, and currently in the Naval Reserve, Chis has a high level of experience in Project Management and Information Technology, and also holds certifications in both fields. In addition, he plans to soon take the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification exam, to further solidify his knowledge of project management. "The chance to work for TLS.NET will give me the chance to see the bigger picture of technology, and broaden my knowledge with everything that TLS.NET offers to their clients," he says.

Chris is as excited to learn more about the wide range of technology solutions offered by TLS.NET, as we are to have him on the team. He says "Life is like a buffet, everything is laid out in front of you...you just have to pick out what you want to eat. I am very excited to expand my knowledge base and to be a valuable asset to TLS.NET."

TLS.NET would like to welcome aboard Brock Ecevit. Brock is a new Network Consultant at TLS.NET, and brings with him thirteen years of network consulting experience. He has consulted for companies that span a wide variety of industries, each with their own technology goals. It is the variety of the challenges and opportunities that Brock loves the most about his job with TLS.NET.

It could be argued that Brock's career started at age 12, when his neighbor could not get his new Apple IIe to start. After gently indicating to his neighbor that he was putting the 5 1/4" floppy disk in backwards, Brock's path was set. In those days Brock was considered quite nerdy for dialing in to bulletin boards with his modem to chat and share information with other people he'd never met. Brock looks upon the proliferation of Internet-based technologies today and concludes, "We are all nerds now."

While once a very dedicated video gamer, Brock has come to enjoy board games much more. Ironically, he finds that building the best railroads, medieval farms, electrical power grids, or re-fighting history's greatest battles to be much more fun with friends and family in person, than virtually.

Brock is excited to work with you on your next Networking/Infrastructure project with TLS.NET. Just leave things to him!

My trip to sunny Orlando, Florida

Very recently I had the pleasure of traveling to one of the so-called happiest places on Earth: Orlando, Florida. Yes, I will admit, sharing the wonders of technology with the world is an awesome gig. And, luckily for me, my departure to beautiful, sunny Orlando just happened to coincide with some dreadfully cold weather that rolled through at our office in Columbus, Indiana. The timing couldn't have been more brilliant.

However, being that I was traveling alone for this trip, I felt that visiting any of the major hotspots would be a tad bit humiliating, or socially awkward at the very least. This ruled out Disney World, Universal Orlando, Sea World, the Wet N’Wild water park, as well as countless others.

There anything to do around here?

But what was I supposed to do then to keep myself entertained? Surely there was some place in Orlando where a 20-something guy could go, even if by himself, to see some interesting sights and find something worthwhile to blog about…all while coming face to face with some ferocious, unstoppable killing machines.

Of course, by ferocious, unstoppable killing machines, I am referring to alligators. The place: Gatorland, where both gators and gator-watchers come out to enjoy the Florida sun. Alligators cover every visible inch of this place, and the sight is simply awesome to behold. Look below, I have proof!

(click any of the images to enlarge them)

Traveler beware, Gators are everywhere

I spent a few hours wandering around the park, marveling at these wonderful creatures, and sipping a seriously delicious mango smoothie. In all honesty, the smoothie was probably the only thing keeping my mind off of the fact that the likelihood of me being eaten was through the roof.

In spite of this, I continued on…this blog’s pictures weren’t going to just take themselves. Although not necessarily their natural habitat, it was exciting to see the sheer number of gators in such close proximity. Due to the fact that there were about 3 alligators there for each man, woman, and child, I am very glad it was NOT their natural habitat.

And this place had a LOT of alligators. There were large ones that were out resting, and smaller ones that were out resting. There were even a few albino gators that were….inside, also resting. The thing about alligators though, is that even when they are sleeping, their eyes will still follow you…waiting for just the right moment…

Down and dirty with the Gators

The highlight of the visit was a gator wrestling match, which is held daily at Gatorland. This was pretty darn exciting to watch. Basically, the wrestler (a rugged outdoorsman who turned out to be a fellow Colts fan) pulled his victim gator out of the water and onto the ring, and proceeded to roll it around several times, clamp its jaws shut, and test out its lightning-fast reflexes using his own hands and head. It was awesome…the pictures really speak for themselves.

It should be noted that no gators were hurt during this event, nor were any wrestlers or spectators eaten…at least not the day that I was there.

All in all, I was really glad I dropped by here. Gatorland has been showcasing all manner of reptilian beasts for over 60 years, and I’m sure they will continue their gator-wrasslin’ for years to come. Also, if you happen to ever find yourself in Orlando by yourself, you are always welcome to come here to hang with the gators.

Until next time!

Johnstown, Pennsylvania: A Pretty, and pretty unique, town.

Small towns often have big stories behind them. This is something I realized when I recently spent some time in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. My nationwide journey to spread the word about technology brought me to this quiet town, nestled in the deep Pennsylvania mountains. I was captivated by its natural beauty, and intrigued by the town’s surprising history.

Johnstown is well known mainly for a catastrophic flood that occurred on May 31, 1889. (Ironically, that is also my birthday, which is coming up…Best Buy gift cards would be fine, thanks.) Record rains that year caused a dam several miles away to break, sending torrents of floodwater into Johnstown.

This natural disaster gave birth to a couple of very unique things, one of which is a man-made marvel which helps define the town’s image (and is also featured on a pretty brochure I got at my hotel). The other is more of a local legend of sorts, which is just…bizarre, in every sense of the word.

	The Johnstown Inclined Plane

An “inclined plane” is a man-made feature that can be seen in many towns throughout Pennsylvania (I even caught a glance of one in Pittsburgh as I passed through), but the one in Johnstown is known for being the steepest in the world…assuming there are actually others outside of Pennsylvania. When you first drive into the town, it is the most noticeable thing you’ll see. Basically, it is a steep hill with something that looks like a traincar, that moves people up and down the hill. Apparently, very slowly.

Being the sucker that I am for a good view, I made to drive up to the top of the inclined plane to get a better vantage point. Unfortunately, the traincar was temporarily out of commission, so I had to take the more painful route to climb to the top.

And painful it was. On more than one occasion I found myself feeling thankful that I was driving a rental car, and not my own. Picture a neighborhood where every street has barely enough room for a Mini Cooper to pass through safely, and then put all of those streets at steep, 70 degree or so angles. Oh yeah, and get rid of anything remotely looking like a stop sign.

After several minutes of determination and road rage, I reached the top of the inclined plan, and I have to say that the view was completely worth it. The town itself, and its natural surroundings, were simply a beautiful sight to see.

It was here at the top that I learned why the inclined plane was constructed, and how it related to the devastating flood that happened long ago. When the flood struck, much of the town itself (which resides in a deep valley) was completely destroyed. As a means to essentially re-locate many of the town’s residents, the inclined plane was built into the town’s largest mountain, and at the top of the mountain, a brand new neighborhood was built as well. This was beneficial for many of the town’s residents who had lived here their whole lives, and wanted to stay, but at the same time didn’t want to risk drowning in a flood. While that was the original intention of the inclined plane, more than 120 years after the flood, it is primarily more known as the “Steepest and Slowest Rollercoaster in the World”. My pretty brochure confirms this.

Oh yeah, the other thing I came to see.

Johnstown is also well known for a local legend, that is also tied closely to the great flood. It is a strange one, so please read this through before coming to your own conclusions.

Back in the 1800’s, the Morley family of Johnstown had a statue of a dog that served as a lawn ornament for their front yard. The statue has since been lovingly dubbed “Morley’s Dog.” As the legend says, when the flood struck the town in 1889, the dog statue came to life, becoming a real dog, and heroically saving many of the townspeople from the raging floodwaters. Unfortunately, since that time, all that has been seen of the dog is its statue form, and no transformations into a living dog have since been documented.

I’ll admit I was somewhat skeptical of this story, but curious nonetheless. I drove through the town for a while in search of the dog statue, to see it with my own eyes. Just as I was about to give up the search and head back to hotel hot tub that was awaiting me, I caught a glimmer of canine at a small downtown park as I drove by. I had found it.

The red statue was clearly that of a dog, and it was at the center of a large patch of grass and several walking paths, so this had to be it. Luckily, I was stopped at a light, so I reached for my camera and was able to get a quick picture of the elusive beast.

But this is where things got especially bizarre. I checked the picture I had just taken to see if it was up to my usual standard of quality, and saw that the statue was clear, but the overall composition wasn’t quite what I was aiming for. I looked back to attempt a second photo of the statue, but saw nothing. No statue, no real dog. It was gone.

Rather than thinking too much about what I had just seen (or not seen), I resigned to just assume that there were people elsewhere who were in need of rescuing, and that help was now on the way.

I took a lot of pride in the knowledge that I had experienced some of the best that Johnstown has to offer, and it’s a town I won’t soon forget. All that was left was to do now was head back to the hot tub that was calling my name.

Hey all, my name is Ben Hatton, a Project Manager here at TLS.NET. I want to announce a new segment for our Blog that will chronicle my adventures as I tour the country in the coming months doing training on custom software TLS.NET created.

Beginning tomorrow, I will be traveling to various locations around the United States, and I plan to keep it interesting. In addition to spreading the word about technology to everyone I meet during these trips, I'm going to seek out the most unique places I can in each town I go to. I'll write about what I see, take pictures/videos, and post them here.

If you want to see where I go, check out our Blog over the next several weeks! Also, if you have any ideas on places I can visit, when I am in certain towns, please just let me know. It could be a monument to a famous hole in the wall restaurant for me to hit up. Need me to deliver some balloons to your Grandmother in Tulsa, OK, just let me know and consider it done.

Even though I'm the one who will be doing the traveling, you can be part of the experience. Sign up for the Blog and keeping checking back on what the next city I will be landing in next.

TLS.NET welcomes aboard its newest Application Developer, Greg Bair. Greg brings with him several years of experience in the fields of web and application development, and communications technologies. "I am happy to join the TLS.NET team, and am looking forward to advancing my own skills while helping TLS.NET continue its growth," he says.

Outside of web development, Greg is an avid user of Linux, and enjoys the challenge of delving into a software's source code to determine how it works, as well as reasoning how it should work. "One of the biggest thrills of building software is seeing how different people would approach the same problem," he says.

Greg is a welcome addition to our Application Development team at TLS.NET, and we are looking forward to putting his programming skills to use for many of our upcoming web and application development projects. Whether you are a new or a longtime client with TLS.NET, your web project will be in experienced hands!

John joined the TLS.NET team in September of 2010 as a Network Engineer. In this role, he will provide support for internal company infrastructure as well as being a technical asset available to TLS.NET customers. One key aspect of John's work is assisting in the development of TLS.NET's cloud computing infrastructure. This initiative will allow small businesses access to high performance virtualized servers without having to invest capital in expensive hardware. Software as a service and cloud computing are the future of IT, and John is excited to be working with the technology.

In previous positions, John has managed network and security systems for non-profit organizations, led a team of technicians responsible for supporting wireless ISPs, and tested custom fiber optic components. John also holds professional certifications from Cisco, Juniper Networks, and Oracle/Sun Microsystems. He is finishing up his bachelor's degree in computer and information technology at IUPUI, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA. John is also a member of several professional organizations including IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Communications Society and the Association of Computer Machinery.

John came to TLS.NET because he wanted more out of work than just being another cog in the machine. He appreciates the combination of enterprise level technology and down home hospitality which TLS.NET is unique in offering. In his down time, John enjoys hiking and camping with his wife Jennifer and dog William. John is originally from Maryland and met Jennifer, a native Hoosier, in California while hiking the 2,650 mile long Pacific Crest Trail.

What do you get when you combine one of America's most revered names in root beer with the best in mobile communications? The Dad's Root™ Beer iPhone app, of course.

Developed by TLS.NET, the free GPS-based app guides lovers of Dad's Root Beer to sources for the smooth, sweet beverage they crave.

Blending today's passion for iPhones, iPods, and iPads with a nation-wide beverage tradition that began in the 1930's brings especially sweet rewards to any generation.

If Objective C programming, Apple SDK tools, or Google Maps ever led anyone to a more refreshing treat, we'd be hard pressed to imagine what it might be.

To download the free geolocator app, simply visit the iTunes store. Better yet, spend a few moments at www.dadsrootbeer.com, build up your thirst, and let yourself be guided to the Dad's Root™ Beer Store Locator app.

In addition, his career at TLS.NET is giving him the opportunity to learn and work with many additional web development technologies, including PHP.

"As a developer, I usually am not the person everyone sees or talks to but I bring the client's visions to life. I try to learn a new technology everyday and apply my knowledge to my work ethic."

Speaking highly of his career at TLS.NET, Ryne says, "Every day is a new experience, and I get to work with the brightest people in their respective fields.

TLS.NET web design services leveraged to create a cutting-edge website presence for hunting and fishing trip organization

TLS.NET is pleased to feature the launch of the Presnell Sporting Collection website. Presnell Sporting Collection is an elite membership that grants its members access to an endless collection of global high-end sporting and leisure travel experiences.

Backed by the Presnell Guarantee of Excellence, Presnell Sporting Collection Members are provided the key to entering a rarefied world where their hunting, fishing, and destination dreams of the elite sportsman can be easily accessed and seamlessly fulfilled. The website that TLS.NET developed mirrors the quality and prestige of Presnell Sporting Collection and has therefore greatly assisted in helping it gain popularity around the world. Presnell Sporting Collection sets the standard for exceptional outdoor experiences.

Because of the nature of Presnell Sporting Collection, they wanted their site to be fully manageable so that they could quickly and easily update sporting trips and member benefits. TLS.NET gave them the ability to change the content throughout their entire site by using a custom interface that is very user-friendly.

It was important for Presnell Sporting Collection to be able to showcase all their elite venues throughout the world, so TLS.NET designed a video gallery on the homepage of the site which gives members and potential members alike insight into the Presnell Sporting Collection experience. The interactive brochures on the homepage also give visitors a more in-depth view of Presnell Sporting Collection. Along with the video gallery and brochures, TLS.NET also added photo galleries on every page of the site that feature numerous photos of venues, scenery and wildlife.

Presnell Sporting Collection also wanted a "members only" section for valuable information exclusively for their members about their various outdoor trips. This section includes a wealth of information about the venues, amenities, activities, and locations. The Sportsmen Gallery and forum give members the opportunity to talk about their hunting and fishing experiences and upload photos from their trips.

TLS.NET utilized the latest technologies in the development of this site including XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL and PHP. TLS.NET also implemented advanced search engine optimization and a site search in order to increase their ranking in various search engines. By incorporating Google Analytics, Presnell Sporting Collection is able to gain current, valuable data on the traffic to their website.

TLS.NET was privileged to be a part of this exciting development project for Presnell Sporting Collection. We wish them all the best as they continue to provide unparallel sporting experiences for their members around the world.
